Job overview

We are a school that values diversity and individual contribution, supporting and encouraging staff to pursue their interests and achieve their ambitions.

We are seeking an outstanding Biology Teacher, whether newly qualified or more experienced, to join a school where Biology is an exciting, popular subject. You should be capable of teaching at all levels and be keen to advance the standing of an already strong department and to play an active role in the academic and extra-curricular life of a lively, positive and high-achieving school. It would be an advantage to be able to teach a second science subject.

This is a full-time permanent position offering the following:

  •  An exciting time of curriculum reform (Latymer is replacing most GCSEs with internally designed and assessed courses from 2027)
  • Significant support for professional development (such as part-funding available for further study, and two periods a fortnight devoted to professional development)
  • High-attaining students: In 2023, 69% of students obtained A-A* grades at A Level. In the iGCSE Biology examinations, 77% of students achieved an 8 or 9. A large number of the A Level students carry on to study Biology-related degrees at prestigious universities and medical schools
  • A supportive departmental environment

Closing date: 9am on Wednesday 9 October 2024

Interviews will take place on Wednesday 16 October 2024.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All posts are subject to an enhanced DBS check, online checks and receipt of two satisfactory references.

Diversity – The School is fully committed to the principles of equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion. We have an established and representative staff Equality and Diversity Board to help drive forward positive change. A further Equality and Diversity Committee has recently been formed from our student population. We are committed to attracting and retaining the very best staff, ensuring that our staff body reflects the diversity of our students and local community. Acknowledging a lack of ethnic diversity within our Support Staff community, we particularly encourage applications from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates for this role. All appointments will be made on merit, following a fair and transparent process. In line with the Equality Act 2010, however, the School may employ positive action where diverse candidates can demonstrate their ability to perform the role equally well.

Welcome to Latymer Upper School. We are a vibrant, forward-thinking and co-educational independent secondary school in West London. Established in 1624 by the generosity of Edward Latymer and located in Hammersmith since 1895, the School upholds its founding principles of generosity and educational excellence.

With around 1,400 students, the success of our Inspiring Minds campaign started by the Latymer Foundation in 2017, means that by the end of our 400th year, we will be in a position to offer one in four students a bursary.

Latymer Upper School is at the forefront of education reform and from 2027, our bespoke Middle School curriculum will replace traditional GCSEs. This innovative approach will develop critical thinking, resilience, collaboration, creativity and problem-solving, preparing them for the independent learning required at A-level. Our students go on to secure places at prestigious universities including Oxbridge, North American and European institutions and are well set for success in the modern workplace.

We foster a welcoming and cosmopolitan environment and our commitment to individualised education ensures that Latymerians are not only highly academic but also well-rounded, grounded individuals.

We are also really proud to have teachers who help raise generations of young people to be passionate about their learning, students who support each other and a network of loyal Latymerian alumni.
