We are looking for an ambitious and intellectually curious teacher of chemistry to join our highly successful and renowned science department.  

This position will be for a fixed-term contract, covering two terms starting January 2025.

What We Look For: 

  • Strong, degree level qualification directly relating to the main subject(s) to be taught​
  • 3 A-Levels at grades C and above (or equivalent) Successful candidates generally exceed this requirement.​
  • Strong sense of scholarship in all taught subjects
  • Strong passion for the subject and its energetic and accessible delivery in the classroom​
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills​
  • Ability to deliver engaging and inclusive lessons that support, stretch and challenge pupils of all backgrounds, abilities, needs and dispositions​
  • An ability to present information clearly, adapting style to suit individual situation and needs​
  • An ability to inspire confidence in the pupils so that they may ask questions and articulate their own understanding

Haberdashers' Boys' School is a large independent school located in the village of Elstree, Hertfordshire. Founded in 1690, the all-through school educates around 1,200 boys aged 5-18, all of whom are day pupils.

The School has a selective admissions policy, with prospective students for the senior school expected to pass entrance exams across a range of subjects. The best-performing boys are interviewed to ascertain their suitability for a place at the School. Entrance to the pre-prep and prep departments is also selective, with assessed playgroup sessions and exams used depending on the boy’s age.

Teaching staff

The members of the School's teaching staff are drawn from a wide range of backgrounds and reflect the diversity within Habs. All are well qualified and have strong subject knowledge with a deep sense of commitment to the welfare of the boys and to help them achieve their very best. There is a strong sense of community within the common rooms, which are harmonious and dynamic places where staff work hard in a collaborative and purposeful atmosphere. There is a growing international dimension to the work of staff with regular visits overseas and links with the best schools across the globe.

Support for staff at every stage of their career is exceptional, with one of the foremost and forward-thinking professional development plans in the country. Pedagogy and teacher development takes a collaborative approach which is both voluntary and open-minded.  Many teaching staff attend Learning Lunches where their peers will demonstrate new developments or ideas with which they have been experimenting.  In addition, teachers can request specific training which is often run in well attended Twilight Training sessions at the end of a school day.  The School operates an ‘open door’ approach with teachers regularly observing and learning from each other.
