We are seeking a highly-motivated and passionate individual as a Teacher of Design and Technology at Driffield School and Sixth Form. Our Design and Technology team is a friendly and supportive department. If successful you would be teaching across the department at Key Stage 3 including some Food and Nutrition and specialising in either Design and Technology or Engineering Design at Key Stage 4. You would be working closely with our Subject Leader of Design and Technology, in an established team with three teachers and two technicians. We have excellent facilities, with well-equipped workshops and promote the highest standards of teaching to support students of all backgrounds and abilities.
In their last visit (January 2020), Ofsted described our school as a ‘happy and friendly place,’ providing ‘a good quality of education to its pupils and sixth-form students.’ As a school, we are dedicated to providing a great teacher in every classroom and are committed to high-quality, collective teacher development. This helps us to reduce the replication of effort and helps all teachers to thrive in our setting. We do this by prioritising the continuing development of our staff. This comes in a variety of forms: professional subject-specific development delivered in department time; INSET days as well as through CPD opportunities across The Education Alliance.
Within The Education Alliance Multi Academy Trust, there are lots of opportunities for collaboration and also further opportunities to develop and progress. As a trust, we are here to make great schools and happier, stronger communities so that people have better lives. For too long in many schools, staff have been asked to choose between being seen as good at their job and being a good mum, dad, partner, son, daughter or friend. We are doing everything we can to support our staff to balance the demands of their jobs and those at home.
To support this, we:
- Trust our staff to plan, prepare and assess at the best time for them, allowing them to go off-site in their PPA
- Have centralised our Behaviour Policy so teachers are freed up from supervising detentions
- Demand ethical leadership built on professional trust
- Reject fads and ensure our CPD is evidence-informed and predominantly subject specific
- Have reduced data collections to twice yearly
- Do not expect staff to respond to emails outside normal working hours
- Do not deploy staff at other Trust schools unless it is at their request
We have removed the following:
- Performance management objectives and performance-related pay
- Lesson observations and high stakes, toxic accountability
- Onerous marking policies
- Requirements for daily or weekly lesson plans.
Above all, we recognise that seeking to remove the number of tasks staff undertake will have little effect on improving work/home balance if this happens within a toxic culture. To support this, we offer training for our leaders to ensure they are able to translate our values into behaviours which are built on the principles of dignity, respect, professionalism and integrity.
Driffield School is based in the heart of the rural Yorkshire Wolds and is easily accessible from local towns and cities (with commutes of 20 minutes from Beverley, 30 minutes from Scarborough and 40 minutes from York or Hull). We are an 11-19 Comprehensive School with approximately 1,350 students on roll. The hard work of staff and students has resulted in a record number of the highest grades at Driffield School and Sixth Form in 2023. At A Level, 45% of our students achieved A* to B grades and 74% A* to C grades. 16% of all grades were A* or A. We are really proud of our students' efforts and achievements and this year saw a wonderful set of results for students who can now move successfully into employment, apprenticeships and further study in Higher Education after a 99% pass rate.
The majority of our students gained their first choice of university with a high proportion securing a place at one of the prestigious Russell Group universities. A record number of students have also successfully graduated from our MEDSOC programme, securing a place to study medicine at university.
Our Basics measures at GCSE continue to improve year on year, with 64% of students achieving at least a standard pass in both English and Maths and 46% achieving a strong pass or above in English and Maths. The percentage of students achieving at least a grade 4 is above the national average in all core subjects. Alongside the strong performance in the core subjects, our students excel in the arts. Our art, music and drama departments all saw over a quarter of students achieving the highest grades of 7, 8 or 9 in 2023.
Our facilities have been designed to ensure the environment promotes learning and these include a purpose built Art and Technology building and a state of the art Performing Arts block. A £1.2 million investment has recently been completed to update the school’s North Building and the energy efficiencies this will create will be reinvested into teaching and learning. All our facilities are actively used by the local community outside school hours. We also have access to the East Riding Leisure Centre which is adjacent to the school site and is equipped with the latest fitness equipment for the benefit of staff and students. The school is also able to use residential facilities at Spiers Bank House, an ex-forestry commission house located near Pickering in the North York Moors.
