Strathaven Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form situated at the east side of Edinburgh. It is a community state school. The school website identifies a school roll of over 945 secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 12 and 18.
The school was built in the early 1900s, officially opening in 1905, created after a recognition by members of the local parish that there needed to be a central school, bringing two local schools of the time, Crosshill School and Ballgreen School, together into one single school. The building was designed by architect Alexander Cullen.

HMIE
“Almost all young people are motivated to learn and engage very well with each other and their teachers. They respond very positively to the caring and supportive atmosphere provided by staff. Young people engage confidently in class and group discussions and listen attentively to each other’s views and opinions. They are made aware of the aims and content of lessons by their teachers. Most young people benefit from opportunities to evaluate their own and each other’s work and to set targets for their own improvement.”
