Job overview

The Role

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic teacher of English who is determined to develop a strong culture and love of learning amongst all of our students, sharing their passion and expertise.

The Department

The English department is a highly successful department which consistently achieves outstanding results. At the core of the department is a desire to enable students to become resilient and independent learners. Our longstanding affiliation with the ‘Let’s Think’ programme at King’s College University underpins our core values as a department, empowering students, through dialogic teaching, to consider their thinking and reasoning patterns.

Our School

St Thomas More prides itself on educating students, to do their very best, in an inclusive environment. We aim for this to be carried forward within a caring, happy and supportive community, taking moments to celebrate the success of all of our learners, both academically, as well as from an extracurricular perspective. The education that ‘STM' provides develops pupils to achieve their very best academically, but also focuses on helping them be prepared to be confident young adults.

We are very proud to offer our students a wide-range of extra-curricular activities, including an abundance of trip opportunities (locally, nationally and internationally) allowing students, and staff alike, to be exposed to a variety of cultures and learning platforms, beyond the classroom. In addition to this, the majority of our students are active in our DofE programme, as well as contributing their time to a wide-range of charity-events.

Our school was recently awarded the Inclusion Quality Mark Award. We are so proud of this achievement as it demonstrates our strive to ensure all members of our community are respected and that we continue to take active steps to implement equity for equality. While we are a faith school, we accept applicants from all spiritual backgrounds and encourage our students to be well-informed on faiths different to our own.

The school has a Well-Being committee, consisting of members from the teaching staff, as well as those from the administrative and support staff. The committee meet regularly and serve as a voice for others to raise any concerns, but also to invent ways to further celebrate all staff. As a small school, one of the benefits is that everyone is valued as an individual. It is important to us that all staff feel that they are respected and appreciated.

The continued success of ‘STM’ in regards to progress is a result of the high-quality teaching, supported professional development, outstanding behaviour for learning and support of our students' families. We are an OFSTED-rated 'Good' school and have been consistently in the top 1 or 2 percent for Progress 8 and this is a success we nurture by encouraging all students, of all abilities, to feel seen and supported.

Our MAT

St Thomas More Comprehensive is part of the South East London Catholic Academy Trust (www.selcat.org.uk) and new colleagues would be expected to share our mission of creating a family of schools that together, through shared support and challenge, strive to provide an authentic Catholic education where all children will be empowered, inspired and flourish.
