Job overview

Outwood Academy Ormesby can be found in the town of Middlesbrough in the north-east of England. Our goal is to continuously improve and become a leading academy in the region.

Through strong leadership, we empower our staff to excel and ensure that students receive the best possible education and outcomes. The academy provides an excellent environment for professional development and making a positive impact on the lives of students in the area.

At our academy, we have highly trained staff and effective safeguarding measures in place to support all staff members. Additionally, the SLT and staff work together effectively to ensure that all students are actively engaged in their education.

About the Role

We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for English. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team. An excellent knowledge and understanding of the subject is essential. You must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘students first’. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals.

This is a permanent, full-time position starting in January 2025. 0.8 FTE part-time will be considered.

As a subject teacher you will be required to complete the professional duties that are expected of a UK qualified Teacher in accordance with academy policies and procedures and your subject specialism.

You should promote the achievement of high standards through effective teaching and learning within your subject area, including the preparation, application and development of lesson resources in alignment with the curriculum, as directed by your department head and senior leaders within the academy.

You will be responsible for effective classroom management and the coordinator of class work with any classroom support staff that are present. You must evaluate lessons and incorporate student views and responses to reflect and identify areas of development.

About the department

The English Department at Outwood Academy Ormesby is a successful team made up of 8 teachers and two one-to-one tutors. The department is friendly and supportive, and staff in the team put students at the heart of their discussions and all they do. There is a combination of experienced teachers, ECTs, and senior leaders in the team who all work hard to ensure students are first and everyone feels supported.

We have a large allocation of classrooms, with full-time staff teaching entirely in one room. Classrooms have video projectors, large screens and visualisers. The library is also part of the English Department, not only in a physical sense but also because we believe that reading is at the centre of what we do. We have recently developed our KS3 Curriculum to embed immersive reading at the start of each new scheme of learning. We want to engage students with texts that cover a wide range of genres and themes. Students study work from Shakespeare across KS3 and explore texts such as Asha and the Spirit Bird, Boy 87, Of Mice and Men, Ghost Boys, Blood Brothers and Heroes.

There is a strong whole-school literacy strategy which aims to ensure that all students can gain the educational and personal benefits of reading. This includes reading in tutor time, Accelerated Reader lessons, and a variety of reading interventions for readers who are not yet proficient. The specialist literacy teaching assistants use the Ruth Miskin phonics programme to support emergent readers and our Library Coordinator leads on Rapid Plus to support fluency and comprehension.

In KS4, the department prepares students for Eduqas GCSE English Language and English Literature qualifications. The programme of study is fully resourced with high-quality materials produced by staff across the trust who know this specification well. We have the benefit of support from the trust’s team of expert English directors, who provide support, materials, advice, coaching and who model and team-teach in lessons alongside us to develop our expertise.

Applicants must hold UK QTS, if trained overseas, have the relevant evidence that your qualification equates to UK QTS.
