Job overview
Post title: Head of English
School: The New School, 149 Central Hill, Norwood, SE19 1RT
Salary: Competitive
Responsible to: The Co-Headteachers
We welcome applications for "Head of English", starting date 28th August 2024. The New School was formed in 2020 and our mission is to positively change the way we educate our children in the UK. We are a research-led school co-creating a new approach to education that puts children at the heart of the learning experience. We prioritise self-esteem, confidence, knowledge, and skills so they can develop their agency, and we use this knowledge to evolve the educational narrative in the UK.
Since we are a small school, you will embody the role of Curriculum Leader and Teacher of English, responsible for nurturing a maximum of 50 children in small classes and spearheading the development of our innovative English curriculum. In our collaborative organisational model, traditional titles like "Head of Department" are not utilised; while some aspects of the role remain as expected, the size and values of our school mean this role is creative and an exciting opportunity, with time to realise these ambitions.
Compensation for this position aligns with our pay-rates, complemented by an array of invaluable non-monetary perks. These include our supportive team ethos, active participation in shaping organisational policies through our sociocratic framework, and the flexibility of enjoying five paid holidays during term time, along with two weeks off at each half-term break. Additional benefits are complimentary lunches and the opportunity to participate in our cycle-to-work scheme.
We are looking for someone who believes that learning should be engaging, critically reflective, and culturally responsive. That learning should be connected to the real world, the lives and interests of young people.
This is a full-time position; and as we always aim to expand the diversity within our team, we welcome applications from those who wish to work more flexibly. If that sounds interesting, we want to hear from you!

What you can expect during our recruitment process:
Virtual connection: Once we shortlist your application, we'll schedule a brief 30-45-minute interview via video link to learn more about your approach and understanding of young people's agency in a school setting. It's also your chance to ask questions about our unique school’s model. This will be one of our Co-Headteachers and another member of our team.
Trial day: Successful candidates will get the opportunity to be part of our team for a paid trial day, followed by a reflection on our practices.
Don't hesitate to ask for additional information or feedback at any point in the process. At our core, recruitment is about building relationships with potential team members rather than ticking boxes. We appreciate your time and effort.
