Information about the Academy

Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College is a mixed Academy school with 880 students and a PAN of 180 in each year group. As a school we are very much committed to the importance of the community we serve and we are committed to improving and developing the quality of teaching in order that students become independent learners, high achievers and happy and fulfilled individuals.   

Governors are wholly supportive of the school and there are regular well attended committees in the areas of  Teaching, Learning & People, and Finance and Premises.   

Broadoak is a successful, popular school where achievement and relationships are vitally important, and where all students and members of staff are valued. We foster values of courtesy, consideration and individual responsibility, we offer a high level of challenge accompanied by high levels of support so that all can achieve. 

Young people are at the very heart of the College; not only do we value academic performance, but we also believe that students should enjoy their time at school and achieve across a whole range of areas. We provide a happy and safe environment within which students can experience opportunities beyond the classroom so that they can become engaged, independent learners and responsible and confident adults.  

There is an extensive support system for students with special educational needs and resources are appropriately targeted to deal with learning and behavioural difficulties.  We have an extensive Student Support Team, headed up by a Deputy Head, including a Personalised Learning Base with allows for flexible timetabling and support for students with complex needs. 

The extra-curricular provision in school is also seen as a crucial component of what we offer young people.  Opportunities to pursue extra-curricular activities and societies are considerable with a number of residential activities available.  

Students in Year 7 – 9 enjoy the opportunity in the Summer Term to engage in an Activities Week, where all students are involved in day trips and residential experiences. At Key Stage 4, students also have the opportunity to undertake one week of Work Experience with a local employer.  

Peripatetic music lessons are available to students and there are regular high quality dramatic and dance productions involving large number of students.   

There is a well-stocked and lively Learning Resource Centre and the dedicated staff run a daily breakfast club, a huge choice of interest groups and regularly organise visits from well-known authors. 

We believe that students should have a range of opportunities to develop leadership skills from playing a role in our school sports teams, being a tutor representative, and when they reach Year 11, perhaps even a prefect! All of these roles provide opportunities for our students to celebrate their achievements and skills and act as a positive role model to others. 

We have excellent relationships with our local partner primary schools, enabling us to offer a comprehensive transition programme. The majority of our students continue their further education within the area, supported with strong links between us and the colleges.  

Broadoak offers all new members of staff a pleasant and friendly atmosphere to work in and   encourages participation in social as well as professional opportunities, whilst striving for improved standards and results. Every teacher is given a lap-top, and there is a strong emphasis on staff development, training and teamwork. We actively encourage staff to get involved with all aspects of college life and extra-curricular opportunities.

We seek excellence from and for our students at Broadoak; we believe excellent outcomes can be achieved for all young people by promoting the highest standards of teaching, behaviour for learning and care and support.  We have high expectations not only of our young people but also of those who work in our College.  Excellence means we work hard, persevere when things are challenging and take pride in all that we do – we don’t settle for ‘good enough’!  

At our heart, we are deeply rooted in our sense of community.  We believe that everyone has a valuable contribution to make to Broadoak; we invest in relationships and believe that through working and learning together, we can achieve more.  We recognise and promote our responsibilities to support each other’s happiness and wellbeing.

At Broadoak we inspire a love of learning.  We grow students’ knowledge, skills and understanding for success in College and beyond.  We do this with a stimulating, challenging curriculum that allows students to feel excited by learning both in and out of lessons.  This provides a platform for lifelong success, as young people leave us with the confidence and skills to be successful in a rapidly changing world.
