Townley Grammar School is an academically selective and socially responsible girls’ state grammar school with a coeducational Sixth Form. Located in the London Borough of Bexley, Townley was founded in 1937 and has over the years established a tradition of academic excellence, scholastic endeavor and lifelong learning. Townley encourages academic, emotional and physical confidence; our students are inspirational learners who have the courage to take risks and the wisdom to learn from their mistakes. The school has exceptional academic, co-curricular and enrichment facilities.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and passionate History Teacher to join our dynamic and welcoming History Department, which prides itself on delivering a broad and inclusive curriculum, rich in both British and global perspectives. History is taught to all Key Stage Three weekly as an explicit subject and is offered at both GCSE and Advanced Level.

At Key Stage 3, students explore a combination of British and global histories, with an emphasis on diverse narratives and multiple perspectives. It includes engaging units on migration to Britain, the profound impact of the Silk Roads, the power of people and protest, the revolutionary 17th century and an in-depth study of African history—covering the great kingdoms to independence. We believe it is crucial for students to explore the histories of all peoples to develop a well-rounded understanding of the world. History is a popular subject at both GCSE and A Level with topics such as the Cold War, Crime and Punishment through time and the European and North American Witchcraze.

In addition to content knowledge, we place a strong emphasis on the development of historical skills. Students are encouraged to engage in source observation and analysis, fostering critical thinking and preparing them for life in the modern world. Key skills such as analysis, explanation, evaluation, and judgement are central to our teaching, alongside opportunities for debate and extended writing.

Our lessons are varied and engaging, incorporating discussion, group work, and creative tasks such as designing projects and posters. Drama and interactive activities, like “Could you survive a medieval village winter?” as well as the use of technology are core to our approach, ensuring that history is both fun and thought-provoking.

We also offer enriching trips to enhance students’ historical understanding and bring the past to life outside the classroom.

We are looking for a forward thinking, inspirational practitioner  to work collaboratively with colleagues, deliver outstanding lessons and to support in the development of the curriculum, raising academic achievement and ensuring all students make outstanding progress. The successful candidate will have good subject knowledge and must be able to teach all Key Stages, including GCSE and A Level. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who is suitably motivated and ready to share their expertise and experience with our brilliant young people.

The post holder will be required to complete an enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Check with appropriate barred list checks, or the equivalent, and must be eligible to work in the UK. All staff are expected to be committed to the Equal Opportunities Policy.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This job description is not necessarily a comprehensive definition of the post.

It will be reviewed regularly and it may be subject to modification at any time after consultation with the post holder.

Closing date: Monday 14th October 2024 12 noon

Interviews will take place from Wednesday 16th October 2024
