South Island School seeks to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Individual Needs and Learning Support, to support students of all learning profiles. The Individual Needs faculty also oversees a Learning Support provision for students with moderate to complex learning needs. The ability to additionally teach English as an Additional Language (EAL), MYP/DP subjects or BTEC could also be an advantage, but is not essential.
Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be a qualified and highly skilled teacher, with a background in supporting students with identified individual needs. You will have a very strong ability to build positive relationships with students of all profiles, and you will be skilled in motivating, inspiring and engaging with students in creative and innovative ways, ensuring inclusive and differentiated teaching both within and outside the classroom.
The successful applicant will also be a pastoral tutor, and will be expected to contribute effectively to our Making a Difference, Values in Action and Expanding Horizons extra-curricular programmes. The position will be a full-time renewable contract for an initial two year period from August 2025. Support with obtaining Hong Kong residence will be provided if necessary.
Teachers at SIS are expected to be committed and flexible. Regular duties include:
- Manage and monitor the progress of students on the Individual Needs (IN) Register
- Develop Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) and Student Support Plans for students across levels of adjustment 1 to 4
- Planning lessons to meet each student’s individual learning needs and ensure excellent outcomes, in line with our Schemes of Learning
- Adapt teaching materials across MYP/DP subjects using differentiated instruction and universal design for learning principles
- Conduct assessments to identify students’ learning needs
- Provide targeted teaching in small groups or one-on-one settings
- Establish partnerships with subject teachers to ensure they understand their role in meeting individual student needs
- Ensure appropriate assessment arrangements are in place for students on the IN register, for both internal and external IB assessments and examinations
- Collaborate with the pastoral team and within the IN Team
- Coordinate with parents, counsellors, and external agencies
- Attend meetings and contribute to student progress reports
- Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment
- Implement behaviour management strategies as needed
- Stay informed about the latest educational practices and policies
- Participate in workshops and training sessions
- Engaging actively with the Making a Difference, Values in Action and Expanding Horizons extra-curricular programmes
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, or
- Bachelor's Degree in the relevant subject with PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate of Education), or equivalent
- Learning Support practitioner with at least 1-3 years of teaching experience who is committed to helping each child reach their highest potential
- Classroom teaching experience is essential
- Teaching experience within a Learning Support department at an International School is preferable but not essential
