Job overview

Teacher of Mathematics (Part Time, Temporary) at Denstone College

The Maths department is one of the leading academic areas within Denstone College, with significantly growing numbers of pupils involved in courses offered within the department and outstanding recent results across both IGCSE and A Level. This position becomes available to cover a maternity leave within the department and offers the opportunity for the successful candidate to join a dedicated and experienced department based in newly-developed, state-of-the-art teaching facilities. The position becomes available from January 2025.

Maths is a compulsory subject within the Denstone curriculum up to 5th Form (Year 11), with all Lower and Middle school pupils (years 7 to 11) receiving five teaching periods of maths each week, with each period lasting 40 minutes. Teaching throughout the Lower and Middle Schools takes place within sets based entirely on the mathematical ability of pupils, with regular school-wide and departmental assessments used to review setting and track pupil progress. We currently have 3 to 4 maths sets across all Lower School year groups (1st to 3rd Form) and 5 sets in both Middle School years (4th and 5th Forms). In 3rd Form pupils follow the Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specification and consistently achieve excellent results with, over the past three years, over 60% of entries gaining a grade 7 or above.

Maths is one of the most popular Sixth Form subjects at Denstone and has seen significant recent growth in student numbers. Six A Level sets across Upper and Lower Sixth years currently follow the Edexcel course that is offered, with one teaching set of students also studying A Level Further Maths. Results in all Sixth Form courses are strong, with over 65% of candidate entries gaining a B grade or better over the past three years.

Every year pupils achieve success beyond public examinations. Many pupils are entered for the annual UKMT Challenges and the department continues to develop opportunities for pupils to engage further with the subject, both within and beyond timetabled lessons through our recently launched Denstone Diploma programme of enrichment.

The Maths department has its own dedicated teaching area within the Derbyshire Building, comprising six classrooms and an additional small-group tuition area. Each classroom is fitted with a newly-installed smartboard. The department boasts a number of experienced and highly talented teachers, several of whom have other significant pastoral and academic responsibilities within the College.

Denstone College has made significant strides in recent years, with expanding pupil numbers and a developing reputation for achievement in academic and other areas. This was confirmed by the most recent ISI inspection which judged the school to be “excellent” in terms of the quality of pupils’ academic and other achievements and also pupils’ personal development. In September 2021 the College welcomed onsite its own Prep division, educating pupils from 4-11 years old, and there may also be opportunities here for the successful candidate to contribute to the delivery of maths to these age groups.

The successful candidate will be required to teach a part time timetable of Maths, with the exact teaching allocation and spread of lessons to be agreed. There is also the opportunity to contribute to Denstone’s rich co-curricular programme. Life at Denstone can be very full but also immensely rewarding.

Denstone College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all our staff to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS and pre-employment checks.

Please note, we encourage early applications as we reserve the right to close this vacancy prior to the closing date.
