Closing date: Midnight Sunday 14th July 2024

Interview date: week commencing 15th July 2024

Avonbourne Boys’ and Girls’ Academies have gone from strength to strength since joining United Learning in August 2019, with Avonbourne Boys’ achieving an OUTSTANDING Ofsted rating in our inspection in December 2023! So, what’s stopping YOU from applying to be a Teacher of Maths at Avonbourne?

This is an excellent opportunity for either an ECT or someone wishing to further develop their career. For the right candidate there may be opportunities for a Lead Practitioner role.

With this year’s examinations the first to return to pre-pandemic arrangements, the results for both academies confirm the significant improvements achieved in the last few years – having transformed since 2019 levels.

Maths is a thriving and successful subject area. Summer 2023, the Maths Department achieved some excellent GCSE results with 79% achieving 4+ and 62% 5+ at Avonbourne Girls.  Avonbourne Boys achieved 82% 4+ and 69% 5+.

At Avonbourne Boys’ Academy, over three quarters (77%) of students achieved at least a grade four in both English and maths, with 60% achieving grade 5 or above in the two core subjects.

Avonbourne Girls’ Academy saw equally successful results across the board. In both English and maths, 76% of students achieved grade four or above, while 57% achieved grade 5 or above.

For the highest grades, both academies had strong achievement rates in both English and maths – with 20% and 19% at the Boys’ and Girls’ Academies respectively awarded either a grade 7 or higher.

The academies are part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.  The academies benefit from working closely with The Cornerstone, Glenmoor, Winton and United Sixth Form Academies, as part of the United Learning Bournemouth and Poole cluster. We work as a team and achieve more, by sharing, than any single school could.

We are values-driven and our vision is to provide excellent education so that all young people are able to make a success of their lives. Our most important purpose is to teach young people things they would not learn outside school which empower them.

Our mission is to bring out ‘the best in everyone’. We are unapologetically ambitious for every child, no matter what their background, prior attainment or needs. We also believe in ‘Education with Character’ – we want young people to look back on a schooling that has inspired and challenged them, given them wide opportunity and prepared them for the ups and downs of life.

We value our staff highly, and treat workload very seriously. Our systems are high leverage, ensuring you can really focus on your core purpose – teaching, in a sustainable way, unhindered by bureaucracy or poor behaviour.

What we offer:

  • An exceptional salary, above the maintained sector.
  • one personal day every academic year.
  • access to our health care cash plan and rewards scheme after six months service.
  • over 250 employee exclusive benefits through our partners, Perkbox, including access to discounted cinema tickets, holidays and gym memberships, car leasing and Cycle2work schemes.
  • Disruption-free learning and a ‘warm-strict’ behaviour system.
  • Collaborative planning with centralised, shared units of work and resources.
  • Opportunity to teach up to A Level.
  • A feedback policy focused on whole class feedback – no onerous marking policies.
  • A centralised homework system at KS3 – you do not need to mark KS3 homework.
  • Centralised detentions, including homework detentions (you do not need to organise/run/chase them at all).
  • No formal graded lesson observations – just ongoing ‘no-stakes’ feedback, helping you to continuously develop.
  • Excellent ongoing CPD, career development and promotion opportunities across the United Learning Bournemouth and Poole academy cluster.
  • Up to 9 INSET days per year, dedicated to subject knowledge development and planning/resource development.
  • An unrivalled professional progression model to enable great teachers to remain in the classroom via our Lead Practitioner (LP) and Specialist Leaders of Education (SLE) routes and/or progression routes to middle and senior leadership.
  • A very pleasant location in beautiful Dorset.

What we are looking for:

The successful candidate will be:

  • an excellent Teacher of Maths who will play an important role in helping to continue the move of the Maths Department into its next stage of development.
  • aligned to our values and mission. If you are the type of person who fits with our culture, you will love working here.

Avonbourne Academies are an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.

Note – We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their application as soon as possible.

About Avonbourne Boys' and Girls' Academies

Avonbourne Boys’ and Girls’ Academies are two 11-16 secondary schools based in East Bournemouth where students share a campus and are taught in predominantly single sex classes. When students reach our onsite United Sixth Form, mixed classes are reinstated. We believe this diamond model of education recognises that as boys and girls reach their teenage years, they approach their learning differently allowing us to get the most out of every student. We have close links with Avonwood Primary School, a standalone primary facility based next door to our Academies.

Disruption-free teaching is the promise at Avonbourne with the notion of continuous improvement underpinning all we do. The Academies advocate a coaching culture, where teachers develop as reflective practitioners, utilising shared best practice and evidence-based teaching and learning initiatives.  In-house CPD is extensive and high quality and compliments numerous external CPD opportunities within United Learning and through nationally recognised training and qualifications.

Pastoral care is superb, with a highly trained team that are morally driven and extremely effective.  We encourage students to develop their skills through the provision of educational opportunities which enable young minds to play a part in creating a future which has opportunities for all and encourages aspiration and determination.

Our REACH values of Respect, Equality, Ambition, Community and Hard work & Determination underpin all aspects of academy life for staff and students.

Avonbourne Boys’ and Girls’ Academies benefit from working closely with The Cornerstone, Glenmoor and Winton Academies, as part of the United Learning Bournemouth and Poole cluster. We work as a team and achieve more, by sharing, than any single school could.

We are #AVBProud and look forward to showing you around our Academies.
