Job overview

Kingsmead is a large, oversubscribed school that, despite serving a postcode in the top 20% most deprived parts of England:

  • Has an ambitious curriculum, with almost an almost exclusively GCSE KS4 and A Level KS5, aiming for 90% EBacc while also having a performing a visual arts specialism.
  • A track record of above average progress scores in spite of the challenge posed by such an ambitious curriculum.
  • Exceptional behaviour, with a consistent approach that combines explicit boundaries with the space to build relationships and support those children who need it.
  • A thoughtfully constructed wider school experience for the children, with an ambitious combination of clubs, trips, careers guidance and wider enrichment.

The Maths department at Kingsmead School consists of 12 members of teaching staff. The Department is led by the Learning Director of Maths, two Key Stage co-ordinators, as well as being supported by an Assistant Headteacher.

This role is an additional role to the expanding department.

Learners in our department develop conceptual understanding and ability to use the language, symbols and notation of mathematics. We instill a love for the subject by teaching students to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, discovering relationships and making logical arguments and justifications.

At Key Stage 3, we work closely with the Maths Hub to implement a Mastery Curriculum from year 7. We believe that everyone can learn and enjoy mathematics and we provide strong foundations that will allow students to progress confidently to KS4 and beyond. The Maths Curriculum ensures a coherent and detailed sequence of essential content to support sustained progression over time and it is regularly reviewed and refined to suit the needs of our students. Outcomes for KS4 for Maths at Kingsmead are very positive, leading many students to study the subject at A-Level, and making it an extremely popular course, with around 60 A-level students in each year group. We also offer Further Maths with most students accepting Maths-related university courses.

Teachers in our department continually develop their specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics, working collaboratively to refine and improve their teaching. This takes place during time that is specially allocated for professional development on a weekly basis.

About Kingsmead School & Sixth Form

‘Practise to Perfect’

Kingsmead is a large, mixed, oversubscribed school – easily accessible from both central London and surrounds – with loyal staff, an established standing in the community and a very strong track record. We are consistently above average in Progress 8 and A Level value added, with high Ebacc entry and a wide range of options at KS4 and KS5. Those outcomes are built on a calm, purposeful and collaborative atmosphere.

Despite the school’s size and standing, the Headteacher was appointed relatively young after experience of leading for a high-performing academy chain and in one of the most successful London boroughs. He has restarted the school culture and approach over the last few years and is determined to push it forward from being in the top 20% nationally to being somewhere where things are achieved others do not think possible.

Ofsted
