Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about languages, enjoys working as a member of a team and is constantly seeking ways in which they can improve on their current practice. This role sits within the school’s vision of educating well-rounded global citizens. Rather than reducing the number of linguists in the school, substantial recent changes are geared towards raising the expectations of language learning across the school and beyond.

From September 2024 all students at KS4 study a language at GCSE as we invest in MFL as a core component of a globally-focused curriculum. In the context of increasing global uncertainty, we hope you share our passion that languages can bring communities together.

This is a 0.6 part-time appointment (maternity cover) effective from 6th January 2025 with a salary payable on the main professional or upper pay scales (MPS1-UPS3) Applications are welcome from teachers at any stage in their career.

The successful applicant will be required to teach German to GCSE and there is an option to teach KS3 French for the right candidate. In addition, the successful applicant will have responsibility for a form and will be required to deliver their weekly lesson of Personal & Social Education.

All pupils study two from French, German or Mandarin as separate timetabled subjects in Years 7-9 and can study up to two at GCSE. A-Level French & German are taught in collaboration with local schools from the KE Foundation.

The language department offer extensive extra-curricular opportunities with language days, and residential visits. There are three dedicated language teaching rooms and a languages’ office. All staff receive a school laptop for work use.

A positive attitude towards the use of IT is essential.

The school takes its responsibility for the safety of the students extremely seriously and applicants will be expected to demonstrate a clear understanding of their responsibilities in this area at all stages of the application process. The successful candidate will be required to undertake a DBS check.

If you wish to apply for the position please complete an application form (available from the website) as well as a covering letter (word processed, no more than two sides of A4, font size twelve) explaining why your experience to date makes you suitable for the position, the challenges of working in a selective school and in particular why you wish to work at King Edward VI Aston School. Both should be e-mailed to Mrs W Causer at vacancies@ast.kevibham.org

Please note that references will be obtained prior to the interview. Referees must be able to comment on your ability as a teacher and must include the Head Teacher of the last school or institution in which you were employed except in the case of applicants still in training when one of the two references must be from the course tutor.

Please do not hesitate to contact us on 0121 327 1130 if you have any questions that you would like ask about the position or would like to visit the school before submitting an application.

The closing date for applications is 9.00am on Monday 14th October 2024 with interviews scheduled to take place on Thursday 17th October 2024.
