Job overview

Join Us, in Shaping the Future of Science Education at Bishop Wand School!

We are looking for a dedicated and inspirational Teacher of Science, with a specialism in Chemistry and the ability to teach up to KS4, with experience of KS5 being an advantage.  This is offered as a fixed-term contract starting as soon as possible with an end date of 31st August 2025.

At Bishop Wand School, our core values—'inspiring minds, nurturing spirit, and respecting difference'—drive science education's evolution. Collaboration is our cornerstone, shaping a community that fosters trainee teacher development and continuous learning. Our Science Faculty is proud of its diverse, inclusive environment which is mirrored across our School community. As evidenced in our recent Ofsted report, students not only enjoy lessons but also excel in their hard work and behaviour.

You would be part of a distinctive CPD programme especially crafted by our forward-thinking Science Leadership Team and part of a wider school development process. Designed to elevate science teaching and learning, this program is rooted in the latest research and evidence. Just as we empower our students, we empower you to evolve as an educator.

The Bishop Wand Science Faculty is committed to achieving excellent results and we consistently achieve above national average in our Foundation groups. We regularly achieve the top grades in both GCSE and A level across Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

We're thrilled to share that Bishop Wand School is currently investing in the refurbishment of our science labs, creating cutting-edge spaces for hands-on learning.

Discover our daily "Brighter Futures" program offering a range of extracurricular clubs for students to explore their passions. Engage in a holistic educational journey beyond the classroom, where students delve into diverse Science clubs and exciting trips, cultivating a lasting love for learning. We also promote our science staff to share hobbies outside their subject. At Bishop Wand School, teachers are not just educators; they are cherished members of our school family. Encouraging active participation in trips, events, and pastoral care, we foster a collaborative environment for shared growth and success. Join us in shaping futures and nurturing passions!

We welcome applications from both Early Career Teachers (ECTs) and seasoned educators who share a deep passion for science. We believe in the inherent potential of every student to learn and make substantial progress across Key Stages 3-5.

It is imperative that applicants have the right to work in the UK. We reserve the right to interview on receipt of application and prior to the advertised deadline.

About The Bishop Wand Church of England School

The Bishop Wand Church of England School

‘Realising God-given potential’

The Bishop Wand Church of England School converted to an 11-18 Academy in August 2012. The School is situated in Sunbury on Thames, Surrey and close to the borders of the London Boroughs of Richmond and Hounslow.  We are continually oversubscribed, with the majority of applicants coming from families with a religious affiliation, and have a growing Sixth Form.

Our mission statement is ‘Realising God-given potential’. The belief that every student’s achievements are valued leads to a school where the emphasis is on the achievement of the individual who is a member of a community where values of mutual understanding and respect are shared.

We were inspected by Ofsted in January 2017 and achieved ‘Good’ on all measures. We are not resting on our laurels and are already on our journey to becoming an outstanding school. In February 2023 our School achieved an “Excellent” judgement following our SIAMS inspection.

The culture within our school is one of high aspirations, significant challenge and high levels of support. This applies to both students and staff. Relationships, which are a vital part of a successful school, are strong and the Christian ethos, care and understanding pervade all our activities. Staff are our greatest resource and we strive to support each other, share good practice and develop as professionals.

We provide a full induction programme for new teachers, ECTs and support staff.  We work closely with training establishments to recruit the very best staff and develop them to reach their true potential.

We recognise that extra curricular activities are a vital part of preparing students to be confident, competent and compassionate members of the adult world. The extensive PE and Sports programme provides opportunity for competition, enjoyment and the acquiring of coaching and management skills.  Our 'Brighter Futures' extra-curricular programme is extensive offering our students a huge range of choice in activity.   The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is well established for the older students and provides an alternative activity from the sporting programme. Productions involving Drama, Dance and Music Departments are keenly anticipated by students and staff. We encourage all staff to become involved in the life of the school outside of their specialist area though appreciate that in the first year as a new member of staff priority has to be given to the core activities.

We have a full time Chaplain who is available to support all members of the School’s community and lead the School’s programme of assemblies and other acts of worship.

As part of the application process should you wish to arrange a visit to our School or would like me to answer any further questions you may have please do not hesitate to contact me. You are welcome to visit the School by arrangement as part of the application process.
