Harrodian is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic and inspirational violin specialist to join our successful and vibrant Music department from September 2024.

They will deliver lessons to new violin pupils and build capacity across the whole school. The successful applicant must be able to motivate and inspire children of all ages and abilities to make good progress in their instrument, develop their musicianship and to foster in them a love of music across a range of styles. The ability to play the piano to a good standard to accompany pupils and play for concerts and recitals is desirable, though not essential.  

This position is for approximately 2 hours of teaching per week in the first instance, but there is the scope to increase this for the right candidate. The role is term-time only and other duties will include preparing pupils for examinations and other school events such as concerts, assemblies and recitals. The teaching hours/days can be negotiated according to the successful candidate’s availability.

Departmental Structure 

This post reports to the Director of Music. 

Accommodation and Equipment 

There are four full-time music teachers at Harrodian as well as a team of 17 visiting music staff, teaching a variety of instruments. The Music Department is housed in its own building and incorporates 3 teaching classrooms, 7 practice rooms and an auditorium space for concerts and recitals. There are 12 iMacs in the department, each running Logic Pro X, Garage band and Sibelius software.

Salary 

Visiting Music teachers at Harrodian are self-employed at a rate of £55.00 per hour and the contract for lessons is between the pupil and the teacher. Our visiting music teachers are self-employed and will invoice parents directly. Instrumental and vocal lessons are given on a weekly basis.

Founded in 1993, the school is co-educational and set in SW London in 25 acres of grounds with excellent facilities. It is a calm and beautiful place to work. Individual music lessons are given in all the usual instruments and singing. Over 40% of the school’s pupils have music lessons in school. Approximately 400 instrumental and vocal lessons take place each week as well as a wide range of choirs and ensembles.

Interview dates: TBC. As part of the interview process all candidates will be required to teach a pupil. Preparation work in advance of the lesson will be required and details will be provided prior to interview.

The Harrodian School was founded by Lady Eliana and Sir Alford Houston-Boswell and opened in 1993. The school’s original intake of 65 students has expanded to over 900 students from the ages of 4-18.
