Edenhurst Preparatory School (EPS) is an independent, co-educational day school located in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire for pupils aged three months to eleven years. Our aim is to inspire and support pupils throughout their learning journey, building solid foundations for future success. Our dedicated staff and small class sizes help us to achieve this by creating a positive learning environment, with a healthy mix of play, discovery and responsibility. When the time comes for our pupils to leave Edenhurst, we take pride in their confidence and individuality, their passion for learning and their ability to embrace the challenges they may encounter in life.

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified Year 2 Class Teacher (maternity cover - January to July 2025) to join our welcoming and supportive community. An interest in teaching P.E. and Games, whilst not necessary for the post, would be a distinct advantage.

Pastoral Care

  • Take responsibility for the safety, education and social development of each child in your form
  • Provide a role model for the development of children’s social behaviour and attitudes
  • Provide a safe, secure and well-organised environment that encourages the development of children as independent learners and considerate members of the school community
  • Implement school policies and guidelines for pastoral care e.g. anti bullying policy
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with parents and carers

Planning, Teaching and Classroom Management

  • Work alongside colleagues to plan a balanced curriculum that develops the skills and knowledge required by the National Curriculum 
  • Prepare schemes of work and medium term plans appropriate to the needs, interests, experience and existing knowledge of your pupils
  • Identify clear learning objectives for each lesson and specify how these will be taught to ensure progression in pupils’ learning
  • Ensure the learning needs of the whole class are met by providing suitably differentiated activities for each child, including those with specific learning difficulties and more able pupils
  • Show an understanding of, and take responsibility for, high standards of literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English
  • Effectively deliver phonics sessions
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of appropriate teaching strategies for early mathematics
  • Provide opportunities for children to use ICT through cross-curricular activities
  • Liaise with specialist subject staff, as appropriate, to help deliver the curriculum
  • Monitor children’s reading and ensure provision of a wide range of appropriate reading material for progression
  • Organise the classroom and resources within to create a positive learning environment and ensure children have opportunities to take responsibility for their learning
  • Prepare children’s work for displays – maintain a high standard of displays in own classroom and, jointly with colleagues, throughout the school
  • Take responsibility for discipline within the classroom and, jointly with colleagues, maintain a high standard of discipline throughout the school
  • Establish good working relationships with teaching assistants

Monitoring, Assessment, Recording and Reporting

  • Mark pupils’ work promptly and positively, and comment appropriately with regard to specific learning intentions and future targets, thereby facilitating positive pupil development
  • Make regular assessments and observations of children’s work, keep records to check work is understood and completed, monitor strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and identify the level at which the pupil is achieving
  • Liaise with Heads of Subject, Assistant Heads, Head and SENCo as appropriate
  • Take part in whole school assessment initiative to ensure a picture of the attainment and progress of individual children is captured throughout their time at our school
  • Meet with parents and carers both formally and informally, as required, to discuss children’s well- being, progress and individual needs, drawing on attention to special skills and talents, as well as any challenges
  • Write progress reports on each child as per the school’s reporting schedule and reports for transfer to other schools if required
  • Liaise with the SENCo to write and review IEPs for specific children
  • Liaise with the SENCo to ensure appropriate opportunities are presented which allow the identification and subsequent enrichment of learning for more able pupils
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding pupils’ records

Professional Development

  • Keep up to date with current statutory requirements, educational thinking and practice, through personal study, attendance at courses and peer observation
  • Maintain competent ICT skills to use in teaching and in general class administration
  • Participate in the annual appraisal process
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of teachers’ professional duties, professional standards and legal liabilities

Other Duties

  • Attend staff meetings and INSET
  • Carry out lunch and other duties as required
  • Assist with special events e.g. plays, concerts, school outings, sporting events, clubs
  • Take at least one extra-curricular club
  • Prepare class assemblies / shows
  • Take part in events that may be during the evenings and occasionally at weekends
  • Abide by all health and safety procedures and report any concerns regarding health and safety immediately to the Head
  • Have a good working knowledge of whole school policies and aims
  • Promote the ethos, good name and reputation of the school at all times

Edenhurst Prep School is situated in a leafy residential suburb of Newcastle-under-Lyme, a vibrant university town in North Staffordshire.

Edenhurst is conveniently placed between two major routes from the town out towards pleasant commuter villages. The area enjoys excellent cultural attractions, beautiful gardens and parks and the countryside is never far away. 

The local economy is prospering with major ceramics manufacturers, such as Wedgwood, Churchill and Emma Bridgwater, along with multinational companies, such as JCB, Michelin and Bet365, taking advantage of the excellent road and rail links. The School is fully coeducational with around 170 pupils including a thriving Nursery which is open all year-round.
