For a musical nation, Wales has managed to create some educational acronyms remarkable for their lack of euphony. ACCAC (Awdurdod Cymwysterau, Cwricwlwm Ac Asesu Cymru - that’s the curriculum, qualifications and assessment authority) has a certain military vigour (and we can feel a terrible joke coming on about how a round of ACCAC could lead to SCAAs . . .). But there’s nothing to be said for OHMCI (Office of Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector), the Welsh inspectorate, which makes OFSTED sound positively snappy - and SPAEM, the Welsh version, doesn’t sound much better. Shouldn’t they have a competition to produce something shorter, and bilingual?
