Adrian Chappell, director of the Arts Learning Partnership, says the arts offer a productive and healthy way of re-engaging young people who have fallen through the net. Many soft social and employability skills, he added, can be picked up through taking part in drama and the arts. His organisation helps to validate and recognise the non-formal learning that goes on in community-based arts organisations.
ALP builds long-term partnerships between arts and cultural organisations and post-16 education providers in further and higher education. It maps progression routes for learners through practical work in the arts. It also advises arts organisations on curriculum, accreditation, student support and project planning.
The ALP was launched in January 2003 with the support of the London Metropolitan university and CM (formerly Community Music).
