Although a high proportion of secondary schools do not hold regular assemblies, the 1996 Education Act still requires all schools to hold a daily act of collective worship, and the current situation is bringing the law into disrepute.
It is surely time to reconsider the value of assemblies in teaching the responsibility, respect, trust and love that Lynda Brine rightly believes should be the basis of sexual relationships (TES, February 21).
Daily collective worship should not be considered in isolation, and could also, for example, help to implement and reinforce the citizenship programme.
