STOP THE TRAIN. By Geraldine McCaughrean. Oxford University Press. pound;10.99.

Much of the United States was founded on the gritty determination and will to survive of a few settlers who followed the railroads to create new communities.

Geraldine McCaughrean brings the hardship of this era, as well as the stubborn settler spirit, graphically to life. This is the story of Cissy and her family who travel to Florence, Oklahoma - a town yet to be built - in 1893. But the Red Rock Railroad Company wants the land; when the settlers refuse to sell, it swears the train will never again stop at Florence, threatening the town’s survival.

This novel, suitable for keen readers in Year 6 and above, is an astonishing feat of recreation, full of warm humour and wonderful characters, such as the big-bosomed, big-hearted, gun-swinging schoolteacher. With its great depth and texture , its masterful dialogue and description, it is the work of a great writer which will move readers to tears and laughter. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.
