ASA primary teacher expected to take on instruction in a foreign language with which I am barely familiar, as well as all the other aspects of the curriculum, I hope that the report (TESS, October 22) on 5-14 languages will be read in conjunction with the article in the same issue on too early take-up of a language.
Beate Poole’s research concluded that the Scottish modern languages in the primary school project has not improved Standard grade performance. Children starting a language at eight do not do better than those starting later. Enough said.
