The campaign, run by the Edinburgh UNESCO City of Literature Trust (EUCLT), aims to get the whole of Edinburgh reading by giving away thousands of copies of three versions of Kidnapped to schools and libraries in February: a specially commissioned graphic novel version by Alan Grant and Cam Kennedy, published by Waverley Books; a Canongate classic by Professor Barry Menikoff, with a preface by Louise Welsh; and a retold edition created specially for a younger audience, also Waverley Books.
This week, EUCLT announced that a further two versions of the graphic novel would be published on February 1. The first is a modern text version for emergent readers, published by Edinburgh company Barrington Stoke. The second is Kidnappit, a Scots language version by Matthew Fitt and James Robertson of Itchy Coo books and published by Black and White. Both new editions use the same Cam Kennedy graphic artwork as the Waverley edition, but have different words.
