I am amused by reports of a big Mandarin language revolution, about Mandarin lessons in schools and a shortage of teachers such that hundreds may need to be brought in from China. I am a newly graduated Mandarin teacher and have been looking for a job for the past six months: fewer than 10 posts have been advertised in The TES, only three in London and only one for a full-time teacher. I have enjoyed my teaching practice, but am disappointed by the demand. But I will keep looking.
