Michael Austin divides lecturers into the 20 per cent who resist management, the 20 per cent who support it, and the 60 per cent who can be persuaded either way (“Is lecturers’ lot a happy one?”, FE Focus, June 30).
This reminds me of an analysis of class in China by Mao Tse-Tung, a former college librarian, written 80 years ago, which describes distinct groups from the comprador class at the top to the lumpen-proletariat at the bottom. He asks “Who are our enemies? Who are our friends?”
