The Tories have been slow to spot ministers’ convenient decision to release bad KS2 results on the same day as good GCSEs. The Diary wonders if they were finally driven to it by irritation at the Education Secretary’s adulatory press coverage, especially the swooning tone of female journalists. Latest to succumb is Rachel Cooke of the Observer. “I try hard to keep my distance,” she wrote on Sunday, “but he is so nice, funny and, on the surface of it, straightforward. Also, he is extremely attractive. It is almost impossible not to flirt.”
Tory education spokesman, “Two Brains” David Willetts, must long to evoke such a response.
