Marie Stubbs, who was brought out of retirement to transform St George’s school, in north London, described how she had inspired an unlikely interest in flowers among boys at a tough comprehensive by inviting in a professional flower-arranger. “One of the Year 11 boys turned to his friend and said ‘You can’t put those freesias with those roses’,” she said.
