(Photograph) - Eyes front at the London Oratory school, one of 53 state schools operating the combined cadet forces, including army, navy and air force. Almost 200 private schools run these schemes. This week Gordon Brown, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said the cadet schemes should become widespread in the state sector. He believes cadet forces, which teach pupils map-reading, rifle-shooting and first-aid, would help to develop a national concept of Britishness.
Dominic Sullivan, Oratory head of classics and CCF commander, said:
“There’s nothing to stop a state school opening up CCF.”
