MorE than 2,500 former teachers have registered for a “welcome back” bonus of up to pound;4,000 to return to the classroom.
The scheme, which will run until February next year, offers a payment of pound;4,000 for teachers of shortage subjects and pound;2,000 for others who were not working in the profession between April 2000 and March 2001.
Applicants must take up either a full-time or part-time teaching post by the end of this year. It applies to teachers in England only.
In answer to a question from Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Phil Willis, schools minister Stephen Timms said that around 600 applications for the bonus had been received in the past six weeks.
