BATH TOWEL

Draped over a radiator,

I’m drying off.

The morning comes and with it -

The odour of my lover.

Squinting as the sun shines bright through the blinds.

The rain over her is more like a storm,

but no rainbow appears.

She rubs me over her,

like sandpaper on a table top.

Draped over the radiator

to dry off again.

He walks in unaware

of our love affair.

By Oliver Brierley, aged 14 who receives Poems on the Underground (Cassell). Submitted by Cliff Yates of Maharishi School, Ormskirk, Lancs, who receives the Poetry Society’s teachers’ newsletter, a quarterly bulletin which includes features on innovative classroom approaches to poetry. Maharishi School, Ormskirk -the name is intriguing and the work is good. A tremendously lively and varied batch of poems by the pupils of Cliff Yates. In Oliver Brierley’s poem there is a little grammatical problem concerning the participle in line 6. Despite this, I am won over by his originality, and his ability to come up with some memorable images.
