The first man in space, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, was born on this day in 1934. His historic flight in Vostok 1 took place in 1961. He died just seven years later in a plane crash.

Adam Braun, founder of education charity Pencils of Promise, was due to address the SXSW film and music festival in Austin, Texas. His organisation has built 170 schools in developing countries in the past five years.

Seasoned protesters
On this day in 1930, Gandhi and 78 followers set out on foot to protest against the salt tax imposed by the British Raj. The 24-day march led to demonstrations and drew attention to the Indian independence movement.

Candles in the darkness
A candlelit vigil to demonstrate solidarity with Syria was held in London’s Trafalgar Square. It was one of a series of events organised by UK charity Oxfam to mark the conflict’s third anniversary.

Answering Ireland’s call
It’s St Patrick’s Day, and millions of people will be celebrating in Ireland and around the world, including the 250,000 expected to turn out in New York City for its famous annual parade. Anything for a good craic.

It’s not all about coding: an education technology policy summit in Washington DC, US, will also be discussing subjects ranging from using computer games for learning to protecting students’ data.
