The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that crucifixes be removed from classrooms in Italy, sparking uproar in the heavily Catholic country. It was “a violation of liberty of religion of pupils”, stated the court, which ordered the Government to pay EUR5,000 damages to an atheist parent who complained. But an opinion poll showed 84 per cent of people oppose the ruling and the Government said it would appeal.
