Step by step sock monster project for KS3 students, linked with the designer John Murphy. Suitable for textile design and design technology lessons classes.
Research and useful links provided as well as a completed example.

Steps for students:

Slide 1 – your title “Sock Monsters”, your name and your class.
Slide 2 – Research page on John Murphy including information about him (in your own words) and photos of his work.
Slide 3 – create mood board of images of sock monsters and other sock creations (minimum of 10 images)
Create your own sock monster.
Slide 4 – Photos of your completed sock monster (you can also include photos as you made it).
Slide 5 – Evaluation
Create a name and bio for your finished creature.
Write a story about your creatures antics and illustrate it. You can do this by drawing your creature or by acting the story out and taking photos of him/her. This could be in the style of a comic book if you would prefer.

This booklet is great for helping students to remember how to complete the basic weaving techniques and avoid making mistakes. I often sent it home with GCSE students to use by themselves and it worked really well.
It includes step by step:
Tabby
Basket
Rya
Box
Soumak
Loop

It also shows potential errors and weaving key words
