KS2 Year 6 World War 2 Guided Reading Activities
Three texts linked to WW2 with comprehension questions. I have also included the sheet I used to encourage the children to make up their own questions, considering what type of question they’re asking.
Anne Frank Background
Blitz Report
The Lion and the Unicorn(scanned book with questions on most pages)
I used these in whole class reading sessions where children took it in turns to read the text to the class before we discussed the questions. They were then given time to record their own answers.
12 weeks worth of graduated HFW spellings and handwriting patterns. Each document has four pages for differentiated homework.
I used these for a year 2/3 class who covered P6 - L4.
I have used a font that I paid for at home, you may need to change it to your school font.
After discovering my new class had poor investigation skills, I set up an investigation to do every week. You'll need to do your own risk assessment (especially for the slime - I got in a science PGCE student to help!) but mostly is silly fun with science to get them excited and making predictions.
There's also an assessment sheet which I gave to all the adult helpers to mark when any child used any of the skills.
(I would recommend a ratio of 1:5 for the gathering of evidence and supporting the overall process)
Supported by circles to colour in, 6 levels of differentiated fractions to order. The first 2 levels as with the same denominator, the second 2 levels are 2 different denominators in the same multiple and the third 2 levels are 3 different denominators in the same multiple. These were made for my year 5's - the Lower ability set are working from year 3 objectives while the middle ability and higher are working from year five objectives.
Template spreadsheet for tracking achievement, green for acheived, orange for partly, red for not, grey for absent. you can see at a glance which groups or idividuals are managing or need pushing by their overall achievement in the subject. It's labelled as maths but can be used for any subject.
A plan for making shadow puppets with a powerpoint to project onto a screen, also link to where you can find a video (which I just used the audio from) to give you sound if you don't want to write your own script. Plus 2 evaluation sheets, one for those with more precice handwriting and another for the more sprawling style!
Seven sets of ten progressively harder 'missing number' calculations. Headed with a learning intention that clearly shows the level and statement of that level. From 3b 'I can use my knowledge of number bonds to 100 to help me find a missing number.' to 5b 'I can work through two steps to find a missing number.'
Dividing HTU by TU with additional confusing information! Allows for deciding how to deal with remainders. 10 tricky questions with an answer sheet. Designed for my most able year 5 group.
- divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context.

An initial wander into the world of negative numbers for year 5. I have included the first day's plan for three sets, the learning intention with 'I can' statements and 11 worksheets that get progressively harder. (The hardest sheets have answers too.) This day's work was written for an average year 5 cohort, ranging from A.R.E. year 3 to A.R.E. year 5. The initial set has negative numbers in context with number lines to support, the second set has more abstract calculations branching into reasoning at the higher end and the third set has very complex abstract calculations such as 4 - (-6)-(-8).
