This is a topic based on NASA and ’the hidden figures’. Students will be invited to go to NASA and be introduced to the four women who were discriminated due to their skin colour. They’ll be doing some reading while at the NASA headquarters. Students will look at memorabilia of the four women and answer questions based on what they read. They will also read an extract from the book written on these four women and answer some more questions. Please encourage full sentences when answering and allow students to really understand the meaning behind the text. This is a story adventure lesson.

Four lessons to this bundle: Students will be going on an adventure to NASA headquarters to learn about the ‘coloured computers’ who changed lives! Reading & Comprehension based on the four inspirational African American women: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Christine Darden and Mary Jackson , who worked at NASA during the Space Race. Vocabulary & sentence Writing: Students will use animations on PPT to design and manufacture their own spacecraft but also search for the parts. The parts provide the students with vocabulary words and they will have an opportunity to write sentences on their worksheet. Grammar & Oracy lesson: Students will complete a recall quiz based on lesson 1 and 2. They will then be designing a Katherine Johnson robot by completing a spelling test. Once the robot is designed they will complete a hot seat activity with her, enhancing their speaking and grammar skills. Independent writing lesson: Students will now write a biography based on katherine Johnson and display it at NASA headquarters All lessons have worksheets

This is a writing lesson where students will begin by recalling key events from Katherine Johnson’s life. They will need to recall the relative clauses they learnt last lesson too. At NASA Headquarters students will be tasked to write a biography based on Katherine. They will read through notes on how to write a biography. When proofreading please encourage students to attempt everything on the list, if they haven’t go back and change it. Hence leave some extra time at the end for proof reading and changing, if necessary. This is a fun and engaging way to teach students, this is part 4 of a bundle. Students will enjoy going to NASA and writing a biography as well as play games and enjoy the animations on the slides. There is one powerpoint and a worksheet for this lesson.

This is an Oracy and grammar lesson. Students will begin with a spelling test. Then they will meet Lori again and she will tell them about the new Katherine Johnson robot she is building. Katherine was one of the hidden figures. They will read a fact file about her and then study relative clauses for grammar. Using all the information they learn, they will write down some questions. Teachers and students should take turns to be the robot and answer the questions. There are 2 powerpoints and a worksheet for this lesson Very fun and creative way of teaching grammar and enhancing speaking skills where they will go on an adventure and learn at the same time. They will learn about discrimination as well as create a robot

With each word there will be opportunity to form sentences, please encourage detailed sentences.
