Different questions that can be used to learn more about new pupils during the transition period. Rolled questions up into a ball, got children to select one at random. They then had to write the question onto a piece of paper and create a paper planeout of it. Each child then had to find a new plane and answer the question.

Part of instructional writing we created Tudor medicines. The children created their own instructions and recipe for a cure for the Black Plague using vivid descriptions, adverbs, imperative verbs and time connectives. The following day in groups, I gave the children 7 ingredients to which they had to describe (water and red dye for blood, glue and green dye for phlegm, teeth sweets, vinegar for urine, bi carb for crushed bones - reaction with vinegar, bay leaves for herbs and mini eggs for whatever they wanted) on post-it notes. In groups they planned before mixing and writing into books.

The children are each given a sheet from which they have to sort the figures out in ascending order. The figures relate to football player values for the boys and how much money a band or singer made for the girls. There is also a differentiated sheet for the football and music for the lower ability. I also got the children to write the figures in words as an extension if completed.

A murder mystery activity that I adapted from another resource. The children have to solve the questions in the clues to create a 2 digit answer. The 2 digit answer will then form a grid location and result in a word (24 = 2 across, 4 up). the clues will lead to one murderer. I have completed the activity in pairs and also included a competition element with prizes for the first three. I also placed an outline of a body using insulation tape in the Sports Hall to excite the children.

A timeline sequencing activity that requires the pupils to use numeracy skills to identify the year of the event. Rather than simply sequencing events and years, pupils will have to apply numeracy skills to answer the questions given. The answers are then the year that the event took place. Numeracy standard is aimed at Year 5/6/7 levels and resource is differentiated between two abilities.
