Year 5 Rounding powerpoint to 100,000 (adaptable for any number)

I made this rounding powerpoint to support my Year 5s. I have included answers which are obviously wrong to encourage the children to reason why they immediately know that the answer can’t be correct. The numbers are in coloured blocks as you can make colour fans and get the children to show the colour they think is the correct answer which is useful for assessing any children who are not secure.

Year 5 Maths- Wilderness Warriors Area, line graphs and number

Used as a successful Y5 Maths observation lesson Children receive an email from the Wilderness Warriors asking them to help to plan for a new animal sanctuary. Architects (Higher Ability)- Plan the sanctuary. They have information about the animals, what space is needed per animal, what is needed in each enclosure e.g. sleeping area and a tunnel between two areas. They have restrictions on which animals can be together and have to plan for this. I used 4 sheets of A4 squared paper for them to draw their plans on. Meteorologists - (Middle Ability) - Decide which climate is the best based on information about the animals. Children have to draw line graphs to plot temperatures and then use these to answer questions Accountants- (Lower ability) - These have a list of costs and have to work out the costs of feeding and caring for the animals to see if the sanctuary is financially viable. This lesson was great fun and the children had a real reason and purpose for doing the tasks.
