The video’s available on Youtube, and attached is a ppt which the narration is based around, for you to tweak/edit as much as you like.

It’s originally for GCSE Edexcel Literature Paper 1 , but you can adjust for what suits.

The theory is, that with a good knowledge of a few of these key speeches, students will be able to cope well with any question requiring them to write about themes or characters. They’ll also be familiar with some important quotes from the play.

The ppt goes into detail through one of the key speeches in Macbeth, in Act 3 Scene 1: ‘To be thus is nothing…’, including detailed language and structural analysis, and how to apply this in essay writing. It also makes suggestions about about other key speeches in the text to revise and know for the exams (35 slides).

4 pages with detailed notes and academic analysis of the chapter: the particular focus is on the contrast between Jekyll and Lanyon in this chapter, and how this links to their opposing ideas, mindsets and values.

There is enough here for 2 lessons, and/or homework. The analysis itself is also quite a useful model for how to discuss character and language, embed quotes and aim for sophisticated vocabulary.

The range of activites and revision questions cover:
The narrative device of the letter
Language differences
Syntax
Key quotes from the text
Characterisation
Thematic links
Major contrasts
Key vocab

Essay Posters for GCSE English Exam Prep

These are 5 posters which run through common errors students make in their Lang and Lit essays, and should give the guidance necessary for high level essay writing. I find after marking mock exams, I’m constantly writing the same things in the margins of hundreds of paragraphs - with no faith students will actually be applying these things next time they write.

They posters are designed for use as active learning tool as well as a display - use them for students to reflect on their own writing (they can green pen their work, peer assess, or write their own targets). They could potentially save you a huge amount of time and effort marking.

The posters can also be used to set targets before writing activities and essay practice in class, so that students are reflective and have direction when writing. They help students to form habits in those weeks of constant repetition and timed writing activities as we head towards their final exams. My students pick two things they want to focus on before they start their pieces.

Make sure you select A3 size on your printer settings, and obviously print to an A3 printer at school, ideally in colour.

Much Ado Shakespeare: Assessment&Notes

This is a challenging Y9 Assessment, which is designed to move students away from the typical PEE/PETER analysis they get stuck on at KS3.

The task is to write a monologue based on a character from an extract (Act 2 sc 3 Benedick speech).

Students annotate the extract in class, to the degree that you feel you wish to support them, and then write an analysis in the first person (like hot seating, but in a written task).

The Assessment is included, along with notes for students, a useful task to support students, and marking guidance. There is also a feedback/reflection ppt, which is designed to make links and set targets for students as they more towards more typical GCSE style questions.
