This is for training students to identify time signatures when listening to music.

It’s basic in that it is just drums and guitar, students listen to the audio files, follow along on the handout, and ultimately are tested on their ability to identify which time signature they can hear.

Sheet includes:
Standard notation 4 bar examples of each time signature written out with drums and guitar.
Guitar changes chord every bar to make it easy to identify when listening.

Audio files for each time signature / notation as written.

It is split into two sections, over quarter notes and over 8th notes.

2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 6/8 (3/4), 7/8, 8/8 (4/4)

Page 2 (double sided) has empty boxes for quizzing students on which time signature they can hear.

My lesson goes as follows:
Explainer - over quarter notes.
Play first time signature to students, count out loud along with it, students read along on handout.
Repeat for next time signature or two.
Students then count in pairs as you play the rest.
Exlpainer - over eighth notes - notice the “speed” difference - more notes.
Play and count the first one out loud (counting faster for 8th notes)
Have students count them out loud.
Quiz students by playing random ones and they write the time signature.
Exchange sheets and peer-mark
(I have students raise their hand if the one they’re marking got it wrong - so we can revisit any that were a huge flop)
