As we prepare to return to school: An introduction… This booklet has been created to provide a toolkit of activities that can be used as starters or plenaries (130+) within a lesson. It will serve as an extremely useful guide at all times however it should be particularly helpful at the current time as we try to re-engage brains that may have been inactive for a while due to Covid-19 home learning. Every activity within this booklet has been selected following careful consideration about what we really need to focus on at the moment: effective teaching, chunking and modelling of powerful, targeted knowledge aimed at creating schema’s within pupil’s minds, delivered in a repetitive manner to enable long term memory storage and clear pathways for retrieval. Any teaching and learning that takes place over the next few months may involve much less face to face time. For this reason, it is absolutely crucial that every single minute that we spend with pupils is aimed at making that knowledge ‘stick’. This can be made much easier by ensuring that strong, engaging, upbeat starter and plenary activities are in place… Also included: An introduction to, and the everyday normality of ‘the science of teaching’ behind Dual Coding…
