‘Blanche is no tragic heroine, just an infuriating, self-pitying snob’. Examine this view of Blanche Dubois in 'A Streetcar named Desire’. A-level English Literature essay. An exemplar essay for ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ arguing that the clash between Blanche Dubois and Stanley Kowalski is an extended metaphor for the collision of the Old South and its antiquated customs against contemporary American society. There is ultimately no hero or heroine of the play, but only a lament for a lost society.

‘At its heart, this play is a hymn of praise to the American Dream’ Examine this view of ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. A-level English literature essay. Exemplar essay arguing that rather than being a hymn to the American Dream, the play is an elegy to the antiquated ‘Old South’ customs. Although it could be argued that Stanley victoriously “conquers” Blanche through her violent rape as a metaphorical result of the strength of his social ideal compared to hers, this insteads cements his status as a villain and thus showcases Williams’ true sympathies for the Old South and its antiquated customs.
