Persuasive Devices

(4)
The premise of this lesson is that a new policy is being considered that will triple the amount of English homework students receive in a week. They have to a write a letter to the Principle persuading them that this is not a good idea. The lesson focuses on 3 devices: rhetorical questions, hyperbole and flattery.

The text in slide 1 of the ppt is a hyperlink to a music video, the transcript of which is the resource (always nice to inject a bit of Pink Floyd into a lesson, though it is a piece about WWII, not WWI). It is a lesson designed for students to explore how narratives can convey emotion.

Macbeth Trial

(1)
This is a carousel lesson designed for a low ability year 8 group. The premise is that the Macbeths are on trial for Duncan’s murder and that half the class will prosecute, whilst the other half will defend (for a large retainer and the threat of not being murdered themselves). I found it a great way of getting them to write in a P.E.E. format without them even realising.

'Conscious', Wilfred Owen

(1)
Exploring the question of the price paid by soldiers in WWI, this lesson draws on the influences of Sassoon on Owen's poetry (if you have time you might want to look at &'The Deathbed&';) and the wider influences of Freud's work in this era. It might also be useful to look at some of Freud&'s work on dreams and the effect of the physical world on the unconscious mind.

Words and Images

(0)
This is a lesson designed to look at Owen's word choice and the imagery he is able to create. Getting the students to think about the mental and physical connotations of the word &'exposure&'; and, hopefully, getting them to think about why it was chosen as the title. The wordle is a fun group task, but also gets them to think about value of word choice.
