Fruit juice carton net.

This publisher file is suitable for any year group from Yr 2 to Yr 6 dependent on what DTP experience they already have. It is a great primary DT resource which yields fantastic results. It can be completed over a few weeks or in one go but that will depend on how much time you can give and the ability of the children. I typically use it in Year 2 over 5 or 6 weeks and make cross curricular links with healthy eating and drinking and ICT. It is also a good opportunity to talk about Graphic Design. The net is ready for the children to add colour and design the layout. Once it has been designed it can be printed, cut out and then stuck onto card and folded together to make a realistic prototype of a real Tetra pak. The holes for the straw can be hole punched in the card and then a real straw can be used to punch though the paper layer once it is assembled. I laser cut the nets for the children but they can be photocopied onto card and then either cut out for the children or the children can cut it out themselves. I used to provide a design booklet but I have found it much better to let the children explore with different designs by using the computer itself, playing around with the images and colours. I get the children to use Wordart to make their drink name but you can do this another way if you wish. The children really enjoy it when I show them how to colour the net with a graduated fill. If you would like more information please get in touch but it is hopefully self explanatory. The download gives a screen shot from publisher showing an example of the colouring, the card net for photocopying and exemplar finished products made by children in Yr2 (as shown in this preview).

DT Passport- Record of Assessment

This is a fully editable publisher file to help children take ownership of their progress and assessment. It can be left blank, printed, and then written in by hand or edited in publisher then printed. It will need to be printed back to back on A4, folded in half and stapled. The columns under each project are intended for you to put the focus of assessment according to the project you are working on. The intention is it can be kept across different year groups to show progression but can easily be edited to use over just one academic year. It is currently designed to be used over 5 academic years but this can be tailored to your needs by deleting pages as required.

An introduction to structures

(0)
This is a perfect small project for Design and Technology in KS1 and KS2. It introduces the topic of Structures. The project will give the children the opportunity to follow instructions to make and test a paper aeroplane (our best dart designs fly up to around 10m) and some simple beams to show how the properties of paper can change with some simple folds. Use whatever you have as the weight, I borrowed 1kg weights from Science; a flat piece of card took 300g but as soon as I corrugated it, it took over 4kg! The children got very excited. If the children are really keen and enjoy the project, you could always extend it to make bridges and towers from either art straws, spaghetti or rolled up or folded paper.

Optical Illusion showing how we see colours on differing backgrounds

(0)
This is a fun resource that simply shows how when we place objects on different coloured backgrounds, the background colour changes how we see the object that is in the foreground. I use it primarily to explain how colouring a black border around ideas makes them stand out from the page but this is also a bit of fun and tricks the children every time. They don't believe the 2 circles are actually the same colour. This is a PPT show which will start automatically and by clicking the mouse activates the animation. The same principal can be made using colour paper and circular disks.

Football World Cup medal design

(0)
With the Football World Cup 2018 having just started, the children will enjoy designing their very only medal. This simple project will give the children the opportunity to act out some footballing poses and try to draw each other in those poses as stick figures. They will then work out how big they need to make the drawings and improve the quality of their sketching. Having chosen their favourite design, they can then develop the stick figure into a final idea and then add colour to it. If you are able, you can prepare some cardboard blanks to stick the medal onto and then add some ribbon, or you could just leave it as a design activity. I find it useful to bring some footballs in to help with the role play, a selection of medals to look at and draw stick figures on the board emphasizing the joints by adding a little dot where they are.

This is a really simple craft activity. Decorate and make a slot together Christmas tree. Simply print or photocopy this sheet onto thin white card, add decoration with pencils, pens, paint or even glitter. Cut it out and slot it together. You can enlarge or reduce the size if you wish when you photocopy it and you could even add some string or a ribbon so it can be hung on the family or school Christmas tree. You could even use this as a cutting template to make a wooden Christmas tree from thin balsa wood. This activity will give the opportunity for the children to improve their fine motor skills with neat colouring, spreading of glue, cutting and creativity.

SAUCE - A way to help choose ideas

(1)
This is a very simple resource to help children remember some key points when they need choose their best design ideas in Design and Technology. The document can be printed out and mounted on foam board; with a couple of small magnets glued onto the back, it can be a resource permanently on your whiteboard and taken down when you want to focus on it. Alternatively you could project the image when needed as a reminder of the message it gives or just print it and put it on your display board. NB - the actual download is a new and improved version of the preview. I have found after a couple of projects using it, the children like to refer back to it as if it they have always used it. You can always focus on different aspects depending on what you are doing. I always highlight the first and last words "Simple" and "Easy to make" . One of the common mistakes the children (and sometimes us, the teacher's) make is choosing and idea that is too complicated so these two points are really helpful. Please don't forget to leave a review if it works for you or needs improving. I hope it is useful for the children you teach.
