Work rate problems (inverse proportion)

(5)

Full lesson on Smart Notebook for the GCSE 9-1 course - covering a new type of exam question on applied inverse proportion.

I have used a table method to find the"total hours for the job" or for three part problems to find the rate ie. “what one person could do in one hour”.

Pupils really respond to using this very clear table method - good for Grade 5 Foundation classes as well as Higher too.

Lesson includes examples, mini whiteboard questions and then practice. Finishes with a GCSE Mock Set exam question and mark scheme.

Forming and solving equations

(1)

KS3/KS4 lesson on forming then solving equations. Just linear equations with unknowns on one side.

Starts with recap of solving equations.

Then a quick example of how to simplify an equation before solving.

Rest of the lesson is examples and pupil questions for each type of forming equation.

Includes a spot the mistake and a quad “these questions sum to” review task with answers.

(Planned on TEEP template using Smart Notebook)

Starter task not my own.

KS3 (or even KS4) lesson on how to rearrange equations using understanding of bar models. Great to teach after solving equations using bar models. Could be good for KS4 students struggling with more formal methods and looking for a pictoral approach.

Use of the concept of “fact families” (part of the White Rose Maths scheme) to introduce the idea of changing the subject.

Lesson starts with more straight forward examples and lots of mini whiteboard work.

Then progresses onto much harder examples.

Uses of prime factor trees

(0)

Full lesson (or two) for KS3/KS4 on prime factor trees and using them to simplify and find roots.

Starts with introduction to prime numbers, prime factor trees, then different language exam questions can use and then a high quality Fluency, Reasoning, Problem Solving worksheet for practice.

Then looks at the uses of prime factor trees to simplify large numbers and to identify square and cube numbers.

Review section focuses on using a calculator to find prime factor decomposition and then recapping the applied skills.
