This SOW focuses on reading analysis and writing skills using both utopian and dystopian fiction extracts including: 1984 by George Orwell The Huger Games by Suzanne Collins Animal Farm by George Orwell The Coral Island by RM Ballatyne Lord of the Flies by William Goulding Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck There is also a MTP attached for the scheme, which details how to use each lesson. A 'takeaway homework' document is also attached with ideas for homework for every week of the scheme. I originally wrote this scheme of work for Y9 however, I believe as some of the extracts are challenging, this could also be used for GCSE students.

The Hobbit chapters 4&5. This is a complete lesson focusing on analysis of literary devices (such as sibilance and anastrophe) and language in chapters 4 & 5 It requires looking at extracts including the first appearance of the Goblins and Gollum. This lesson can be used as a one off reading skills lesson, or as part of a complete Hobbit SOW. It is aimed at high ability pupils, but includes modeling and writing frames for lower ability pupils. It encourages pupils to consider the effect of devices on the reader and what the authors intention might be. The paragraph writing frame's used are PETER which hits all the descriptors of the new AQA specification for reading analysis.

I have pitched it at a high ability Y9 group, however it could be easily differentiated to work well for any year group. The lesson looks at the opening where Holmes and Watson meet for the first time and asks, what do we learn about Holmes' character from the way the author describes him? Students will learn what deduction and inference is and practice these skills using the extract.
