Three differentiated paired games to practice adding fractions. A 1-20 dice is needed. The lower ability game requires pupils to add fractions that have the same denominator, The middle ability game involves adding fractions where denominators have the same multiple (changing one fraction). The higher ability game requires students to find the lowest common multiple before adding the fractions. Some answers will be written as improper fractions and pupils could also be asked to write their answers as mixed numbers.

I used this with a Year 3 class for finding fractions of numbers. I put different sets of objects on each table and the children had to work out how many for each fraction by dividing them up into groups based on the denominator then counting how many in each group. The higher abilities needed to work out which fraction they were going to use

Measuring angles/Using a protractor/naming angles KS2 differentiated Year 5

I made these for a Year 5 lesson. I set up the tables as shown in the pictures. There were four triangles and one rectangle for the lower ability tables, four triangles and one quadrilateral for the middle ability and polygons (at least one quadrilateral and two hexagons) for the higher ability. I modelled how to use a protractor and asked them to measure the angles on the starter activity.

Then, in ability pairs, the children had to measure their angles and write the angles on the table in whiteboard pen. They then chose two triangles and recorded their results on the worksheet, checking all angles add up to 180 degrees. There is an extension task on all worksheets if they finish.

Can be adapted.
