<p><a href="https://www.redcross.org.uk/get-involved/teaching-resources/refugees-contributions-creativity-and-resilience" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">These resources</a> (for <strong>7</strong>-<strong>14</strong> year-olds) celebrate 20 years of Refugee Week helping learners to build empathy and understand the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees. Through real-life case studies, films and creative writing, learners will increase empathy towards refugees and learn about shared interests, such as music. These session plans can also be used throughout the year to help learners increase their knowledge and build their understanding of what life can be like for refugees and asylum seekers.</p> <p>Activities are differentiated for <a href="http://www.redcross.org.uk/get-involved/teaching-resources/primary-teaching-resources" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">primary</a> and <a href="http://www.redcross.org.uk/get-involved/teaching-resources/secondary-teaching-resources" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">secondary </a>learners and include discussion questions, a walking debate, creative activities and video case studies. Key facts and terms are included for educators, along with guidance of how to manage discussions sensitively.</p> <p>We’ve created five activities designed to take approximately 30-45 minutes.<br /> • Kick start your lesson by creating a safe space and exploring initial views towards refugees and asylum seekers.<br /> • Develop learners’ understanding of key terms and build empathy through real-life case studies.<br /> • Consider how refugees can strengthen their resilience and cope with building a new life.<br /> • Explore how creativity can bring people together to express their feelings and share experiences. <p>‘Understanding people’s experience of migration’ is an engaging teaching resource that helps learners aged 10-16 develop empathy and understanding towards people with experience of migration.</p> <p>Stories, films, creative activities and discussion ideas are used within this resource to help learners think about why people migrate, what it is like to arrive somewhere new and how we can help refugees and people seeking asylum feel welcome.</p> <p>This resource was made in collaboration with six ambassadors from the VOICES Network, a collective of refugees and people seeking asylum and the British Red Cross. As people with lived experience of migration, the VOICES ambassadors share unique insights into what it is like to seek asylum in the UK.</p> <p>The key messages the ambassadors wanted young people to learn about the migration experience include:</p> <ul> <li>understanding being forced to leave your home</li> <li>recognising the similarities we have with young people who have migrated and;</li> <li>breaking down negative stereotypes.</li> </ul> <p>The ambassadors designed the activities in this resource to explore these experiences and include some of their own stories of migration.</p> <p>**Credit **</p> <p>This resource was developed in a co-production project by Khadeja, Claudia, Mada, Asmaa, Sabrine and Almas (VOICES Network) and the British Red Cross in 2024.</p>
