This resource contains an autism awareness activity pack. It is an ideal resource for Autism Awareness Day / Week. The pack contains six activities.

Sensory Sensitivity / Overload

This activity begins with watching a short clip about sensory overload. There are two tasks that follow designed for pupils to experience sensory overload when attempting to complete tasks; one is more challenging than the other.

Autism Discussion Cards

These contain 4 statements about autism designed to provoke discussion and to get the pupils to think about and develop their awareness of autism. They are not true or false statements and there are no right or wrong answers.

Communication Difficulties Exercise

This is a task designed to simulate the difficulties that many people with autism encounter when trying to communicate. Pupils take part in an activity in which they have to think very carefully about the words they use and what they are saying.

What is autism? How Can I Help?

Pupils watch a video about autism in which a young man explains 5 things he thinks people need to know about autism and 5 things people can do to help people with autism. Pupils are asked to discuss the five things that the person felt people needed to know about autism and five ways that people can help. Pupils then complete a worksheet.

Autism Acrostic

Pupils complete an acrostic piece of writing using the word autism as a stimulus. Two acrostic autism posters are included to give the pupils some ideas. An autism acrostic template is also included.

You may also be interested in:

Autism Awareness Presentation

This is a fully editable and interactive presentation on autism and Autism Awareness Day / Week.

It includes sections on

Social Communication Difficulties
Social Interaction Difficulties
Rigid Thought Processes
Sensory Issues
Repetitions and Rituals
Obsessions
Gifts and Talents
Famous people With Autism / Asperger’s

There are hyperlinks to videos and clips about:

Sensory overload
Autism
Schools’ Awareness Week
A young person and his autism

Autism Awareness - Set of 22 Posters

Save money and buy all three resources in a bundle at a discounted rate:

Autism Awareness Bundle

This resource contains an autism awareness activity pack.
Save 25% with this Seasonal Bundle.

Activities and tasks for your pupils with Autism!

Includes early reading, writing and maths activities to help achieve those early targets and build on working independently!

These are the individual resources included:

Spring TEACCH Tasks £3

Summer TEACCH Tasks £3

Autumn TEACCH Tasks £3

Winter TEACCH Tasks £3

When using TEACCH tasks the task that is to be completed should be placed on the left hand side of the desk/workstation. The pupil then completes this task and places it on the right when completed. Having a clear visual for the pupil to identify where the finished tasks go is preferable. This clear structure allows the pupils to focus on the task they are completing and not be distracted by the work process. It is important to remember that when completing these tasks it is also about creating and building independence as well as success at the task, this is why the consistent work approach (working from left to right is so important)

When using these tasks I would recommend using them for at least 4-6 weeks. For some children it may take up to a term for them to master the skill and be able to complete this independently.

This is a ppt containing information on 25 well known people who are known to have a diagnosis/thought to have some traits of ASD. I put it together for Autism awareness week. I encouraged teachers to show one at the start of each lesson and have a short discussion with their class using the quotes on each slide.
You could use it to promote inference skills by asking key questions rather then reading out the ppt to them. Such as- What information do we know already about this person? What does the slide tell us? What characteristics of Autism does it tell us this person has? What do you think of this quote? What do you think the person was trying to say?
Can also be used as a display around the school.

A little pocket guide for finding your way around Attention Autism for beginners.
Attention Autism is an intervention created by Gina Davies with the idea to support children on the Autistic spectrum focus and maintain attention. This is a little pocket guide I originally created for a friend of mine with information that I found online and collated together. It has some of the aims and rules of Attention Autism and also some great ideas for Stage 2 and 3. A handy guide to have.
Originally this guide was printed A5, laminated and bound with a key ring.
