Cardinal Routes Task is a lead on from cardinal cones. Students should now be aware of the cardinal points and can use it to create a route around your school. The 8 starting locations can be edited to suit your school environment. Students then work in small groups, they choose a starting location then add the direction and count the steps/until the next landmark or location. Once the route of their choice is completed they must test it and ensure it is correct. Either in the same or next lesson they then randomly swap papers with another group and attempt to complete the route provided. Once all instructions are followed then write what they think is the end location and the other group confirms if it is correct or not.

Two charts of ordinal and cardinal numbers, spelling, descriptions and examples of cardinal, ordinal and nominal numbers.

This resource can be used in class as a handout for teaching basic numeracy and English language.

A simple interactive counting game, designed in Powepoint to support the development of children’s early number knowledge from 1 to 5. Children are presented with different amounts of poppies in the ten-frame. Children need to count the poppies in the ten-frame and identify and click the matching number digit card. Different ways of showing 2, 3, 4 and 5 are explored using the ten-frame. A great starter activity for use on the interactive whiteboard as part of whole class teaching and learning, exploring amounts from 1 to 5. Links well with WhiteRose planning and “5 Alive” unit in the Autumn term. Easily editable to build a greater level of challenge by introducing numbers beyond 5.

The Powerpoint slides also include ten-frame templates showing poppy amounts from 1 to 5 in various arrangements. The ten-frames can be printed and laminated and are ideal for any follow up independent learning opportunities or directed small group work.

Cardinal Number is the eighth video in the series supporting the Child's Play Maths programme. No more counting on fingers once children have grasped this important concept.
The series is comprised of over 60 sequential videos and follows the programme outlined in Child's Play Maths. Each video provides a practical tutorial using the software app available from the Help Your Child store.

The programme itself adopts a radical and practical approach to the introduction and teaching of maths concepts and is compatible with any school curriculum.

Understanding is achieved via play, games and open-ended tasks and challenges.

The programme utilises Cuisenaire Rods universally regarded as the most complete arithmetical model ever devised. Sadly their potential is rarely explored.

Child's Play Maths is designed to introduce maths concepts to children from the age of 5 years through to the age of 11 years.

It can equally be used as an effective 'catch-up' program for older children or adults who struggled to grasp maths concepts the first time round.
