I have designed lessons over a 7-week block which cover the problem solving elements of OAA. Some lessons are jam packed so you might not cover all the tasks, I have done a few task cards to help you, which you could even give to the students to set up.

Please note I do my lessons on a Mac, so things might move and also I am dyslexic, so I might make some silly mistakes.

The teacher delivering these activities must familiarise him/herself with the Outdoor Learning Cards prior to undertaking the lessons in this unit. The lessons here are pitched at an average ability level, but there may be requirements to adapt the lesson to different classes. The differentiation and progression sections on the O.L.C’s will aid in this process.

A host of 11 task cards showing how to deliver different exercises in OAA. Task cards include safety, how to carry out the task, diagrams, differentiated tasks and links to the strands of the curriculum.

What Is The Programme For?

Outdoor Learning Programme is designed to fulfil the National Curriculum requirements for Outdoor and Adventurous Education within PE. Many schools fulfil these requirements by taking students on residential trips to outdoor centres. But this isn’t possible for every school, and perhaps from time to time not every pupil is able to go. So, our Outdoor Learning Programme provides a very cost-effective alternative or back-up.

How Does It Work?

It is designed to be delivered by you, the non-specialist class teacher. It is designed for standard-size classes of approximately 30 pupils. It deliberately only uses very basic equipment which most schools will have already. It is designed to take place in schools where you barely have any facilities whatsoever… simply a small playground sufficient for almost all activities.

About The Author

Our programme was designed by Pat Callaghan, a P.E specialist with over 35 years of experience. His career has encompassed a diverse range of teaching and leadership roles, within both primary and secondary education sectors. In the last 15 years Pat has worked almost exclusively within the primary sector in both teaching and consultative capacity.

An outdoor adventurous activity unit of work for year groups 5 & 6. The resource provides a unit of work covering 6 lessons. The unit of work shows the key lessons and key points to cover as well as the necessary resources needed. To use the resource, simply follow the framework and modify to suit the needs and abilities of your pupils. You can also use the framework as a base to develop your own unit of work and lesson plans. I have used this framework throughout my teaching career with proven success. In using this framework I have seen major development and progress in pupils of all ages. I have also used the framework as a base to creating extremely successful competitive school teams both internationally and in the UK.

This plan is based on the PE unit, Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA). The planning is suitable for all KS2, I have taught this with a year 3 class. The lessons are based on solving various problems as a team, including when we lose one of our sense and orienteering.

This Year 4 scheme of work includes 1 terms worth of planning with focused input, differentiation and teaching points.
